Tips for Improving Your Handwriting

How to handwrite nice.  Unfortunately, with the new age of the computer, it seems that handwriting is a lost art and many are comfortable with handwriting that does not look much different than chicken scratch. While it is true that computers do a great deal of work for you now days, it is also very important that you have legible handwriting as well. If your writing looks more like a foreign language to those who try to read it than English, then that may be a clue that you need to start working on your handwriting. The following are some great tips that will help you improve your handwriting so it looks neat and precise instead of sloppy and unreadable.

Tip #1 - Choose a Slant - One problem that many people have when writing is that they tend to slant their letters in all different directions. If you choose one way to slant all of your letters, your handwriting will appear neater and have a more uniform look. Whether you choose a forward slant, and backwards slant, or even a straight vertical style of writing, making sure that you keep it consistent will give your writing that polished look that you want.

Tip #2 - Keep Proportions Controlled - Another tip that can help you have nice looking handwriting is to control the proportions. This includes controlling the amount of space between each word, the length of the tails of your letters, and the relationship that you have between capital and lowercase letters. Work on keeping these proportions the same at all times so your writing has a uniform look that will make it look neat and professional.

Tip #3 - Concentrate on Problem Letters - It is a great idea to take a look at your writing and try to identify the letters that you seem to have the most difficulty with when writing. Once you find the letters that you have the most problem with, then you should take the time to work on writing those letters correctly and legibly. A special concentration on letters that are difficult for you can help you improve the way your handwriting looks all around.

Tip #4 - Use the Right Posture - Believe it or not, the proper posture has a great deal to do with the quality of your handwriting. In order to make your writing appear much neater you need to make sure that you have the right writing posture. When you are writing you should make sure that you sit up straight and place your feet flat on the floor. Allow your elbows to rest comfortably on the table that you are writing on and make sure that you use your entire arm as you are writing. Many people make the mistake of only using their hand to writing, but excellent writing actually involves the use of the entire arm. If you are only using your hand when you write, then more than likely your handwriting is going to look tight and forced. Using the entire arm allows your handwriting to flow naturally.

Tip #5 - Take a Calligraphy Class - If you are serious about improving your handwriting skills you may want to take a calligraphy class. Many people have found that by learning calligraphy they were able to improve their handwriting skills as well. Calligraphy teaches various techniques and how to control the strokes you make, and while your handwriting is a bit different than calligraphy, you can use a variety of the principles taught to develop better penmanship. If you want to take a calligraphy class, check at your local community colleges to see if they offer a class in calligraphy.

Tip #6 - Holding the Pen Correctly - Another important tip that can help you to improve the way your handwriting looks is to make sure that you hold the pen correctly. Many people hold the pen to tightly or hold it between the wrong fingers. Not only will the wrong grip on you pen cause your writing to look sloppy, but it can actually lead to finger and wrist problems in the future. To properly hold the pen, the pen should be held at an angle between the thumb and forefinger at a slant, and it should be held in a relaxed manner. Keeping the proper grip on your pen can help your handwriting improve quickly.

Tip #7 - Practice Makes Writing Perfect - One of the most important tips that will help you improve your handwriting is to make sure that you get plenty of practice. If you are really serious about improving your handwriting then you should be taking time to practice it every single day. After a couple weeks of consistently practicing your handwriting skills you will see a big difference in the way your writing looks. Always make sure that you keep evaluating your writing for mistakes and look for more ways that you can improve it as the weeks go by.

Your handwriting is very important and it also says a lot about you as well. Many times employers, prospective colleges, and other people will take a look at your handwriting in order to make some judgments about you. If you have handwriting that is less than perfect then you need to use these tips to help you develop better penmanship. With just a few minutes every day you can quickly improve your handwriting if you are willing to do a little work.
