Illiteracy
Illiteracy is an epidemic sweeping our nation. Recently there has been much talk about illiteracy and how many people are able to slip through the cracks of the school systems and sometimes even graduate from high school without the ability to read. As unfortunate as this is, there are many reasons for illiteracy and even the US government has taken notice and taken action with the ‘No Child Left Behind’ program that has started nationwide.
Illiteracy is the inability to read and or comprehend what has just been read. There are other forms of illiteracy where someone may be able to glance at a paper with words on it and can read enough to get by, but can’t comprehend what they have just read. Other people have no ability to read the letters on the paper and also no ability to write them down themselves. The official definition of illiteracy from the United Nations is the inability to read and write a simple sentence in any language.
The US is not the only country experiencing an increase in illiteracy. That is why it was up to the UN to define illiteracy

so that it can be pinpointed all over the world. As much as 15% of the world is illiterate and in some areas the number seems to be increasing.
Impoverished American cities like Detroit, MI have seen a drastic spike on the illiteracy charts. Many attribute poor literacy rates in metro cities like Detroit to the lack of funds and teachers available for the schools. There is also a lot of blame on high school drop outs and stressful learning environments. The highest percentage of illiterate students in America are Hispanic and their inability to read or write could be directly correlated to a language barrier in the schools.
Despite the many reasons that 14% of the American population can’t read or write, there is a problem that needs to be solved. Schools are calling out for help both monetarily and from trained teachers to fill the empty positions at their schools. Illiteracy is not something that can be ignored.
