Tips on How to Homeschool
If you are currently homeschooling or considering this for your child, you probably know all the benefits it can provide. Not only do you have a controlling power on what is being taught to your child but you could even personalize the course according to your child's specific learning needs and stay away from the pressures of public school education. However, are you aware of the major mental and social damage you can cause if you don't make the right choices?
Remember al children need friends and playmates and they find them in school. What will the other kids think of your homeschooled child? Like it or not, children in public schools often think that homeschooled children are not in public school because of mental disorders, behavioral problems, or "freaky" parents. This makes your child out of the ordinary, and this may make others make fun or tease him. You need to take care of these problems if you want your child to attend college just everyone else.
When you decide to homeschool the child, also take care of his companionship needs and this as important as his academic needs. For the child to have a positive social sphere later, here are some tips that would help you to put him on the right path. Know your neighborhood and start with where you live: How many children close to your child's age live nearby? Do you know the parents? If not, you need to. Look for parents who live close by and mention to them that you are out to set up a play date for your child. Since you are the initiator, it is your responsibility to set the ball rolling, so fix up a party and call a clown to liven things up. Call all the kids in the neighborhood along with their parents and set up a ball game, fishing, bowling or similar activities which kids love and even be prepared to baby sit if necessary.
Sporting activities offer the best opportunities where children bond with each other. Since they play together they also spend a lot of time building a bond, and you too get an opportunity to meet other parents. In case your child has some physical handicap, which would prevent him for participating in these types of sports activities make him join groups like girls/boys scout or other similar kid organizations.
Some parents make the mistake of believing that homeschooling their children means they can keep them safe from the outside world but this too is an unhealthy attitude. While it is important to keep them away from dangerous situations, it is also important to let them be exposed to the same influences as other children. Already your kid is getting branded as a ‘funny' kid and having problems to cope with it, can you imagine where it would land him in the social circle if he was clueless about TV shows, the latest bands or even the current kid fashion trends? Without any exposure to what the modern society is going through, your kid runs the risk of being treated like an outcast and would have a lot of problem relating to others.
